Public health officials take seriously their charge to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the individuals in these data, yet, at the same time, unleash the power of the data to improve health and health care. Balancing these dual responsibilities is an ongoing challenge, especially with technological advancements, the need for timely, actionable data, and society’s heightened concerns with privacy.

Precise geocoding of hospitalization and emergency department (ED) discharge data can be used to reduce errors in linkages and improve the quality of the linked databases, provide greater analytic applications at the census tract level for surveillance activities, allow for market share analysis and provide greater understanding of the health of a community. Presentations from two projects that have used geo-coded discharge databases highlighted the importance of collaborating for success, technical approaches, findings and implications. Professor Ge Lin from the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Community Health Sciences will discussed his geo coding project with Nebraska Hospital Discharge data and the process for developing and evaluating a master address index.
