Source of Payment Typology

The Source of Payment Typology (SoPT) is a standard way to classify who pays for healthcare. It gives health data organizations, public health agencies, and researchers a consistent way to report payer data and compare it across states, provider types, and national benchmarks.

What It Is

The typology groups payers into broad categories, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance, with more specific subcategories under each.

It was created by the former Public Health Data Standards Consortium (PHDSC) Payer Typology Subcommittee. NAHDO now hosts the typology and coordinates its distribution, review, and updates.

Who Uses It

  • Health data organizations collecting payer information
  • Public health agencies reporting on healthcare services
  • Researchers and healthcare analysts comparing data by payer type
